Our process

When a client has a pre-existing condition, or has suffered a serious illness in the past, the first thing we do is pick up the phone. We speak to Underwriters at many of the UK’s leading Insurance companies. Discussing all of our client’s medical history helps us to identify the best company to apply to. This also means we avoid applying to companies who will end up being too expensive or worse, decline an application. By completing our research thoroughly, we are able to avoid wasting time and obtain the best terms possible for our clients.

What are the risk factors associated with  being overweight?

According to the NHS, being overweight or obese can lead to serious or even life threatening health conditions, such as type 2 diabetes, colonary heart disease, strokes and some types of cancer. As a result of this insurance companies ‘factor in’ the additional risk they think they will be taking on.

Ultimately the additional risk will be applied to the final ‘underwritten’ premium. This is called a ‘loading’. Typically a loading will range from an additional 50% to 200% on top of the basic premium. For example a ‘loading of 100% would mean the final premium being offered would be double the premium initially quoted.

In the most extreme of cases an application might be declined (if someones BMI is over 55), but in our experience we can normally find an insurance company who would be prepared of offer a client cover.

As you will see from the case study below, each insurance company underwrites in a different way. Our job as Independent specialists is to find the best solution for our clients.

Case study – Will being overweight stop me from getting life insurance?

We were contacted by our client, a 31 year old, female, non smoker. She wanted to arrange a life insurance policy to provide financial protection for her children in the event of her death whilst they are still dependent on her. We discussed various terms and she decided a policy to retirement age would be best suited to her circumstances and affordable budget.

Our client had been struggling to obtain life insurance due to her height/ weight ratio.  The body mass index (BMI) is a measure that uses your height and weight to work out if your weight is healthy. For most adults, an ideal BMI is in the 18.5 to 24.9 range. Our client is 6ft but 22 stones giving her a BMI of 41.7. She does not have any other medical conditions to disclose.

An excellent outcome

After doing research for our client, we discovered that most companies would increase the original premium by about 175% or more, however we found one company that was able to offer our client cover with a loading of only 100%.

We managed to arrange a life insurance policy with a sum assured of £70,000 until he reaches the age of 65 for a monthly premium of just £12.16.

Any quote that your adviser provides you with will take into account to your circumstances, your medical history, as well as your budget!

An on-line quote is just that – a quote – it isn’t a definite offer of cover. What really matters is the premium you are offered, after your application has been assessed.
