How many protection claims were paid out by Shepherds Friendly in 2021?
Shepherds Friendly has paid out 95% of all income protection claims in 2021 totalling £2.5 million.
Income protection
The majority of income protection claims were from:
- (43%) musculoskeletal issues
- (15%) mental health
- (14%) Covid-19
The mutual paid out £12,000 to the families of members who unfortunately died during the term of their plans. This is part of the additional Death Benefit, available at no extra cost to all Income Protection members as part of their Enhanced Income Protection Benefits.
Additional benefits
During the year, Shepherds Friendly made changes to its income protection policies enabling members to access Nuffield Health Benefits. This change allowed clients access to virtual GP appointments, emotional wellbeing support and discounted gym memberships.
The Society also upgraded its claims handlers’ qualifications to include CII and Mental Health First Aid training.
Other changes included giving customers access to rehabilitation services such as physiotherapy, mental health support, as well as occupational health and vocational support services (provided by Enable).
Financial support
Ann-Marie O’Dea, chief executive at Shepherds Friendly, commented: “We are pleased again to report a high level of pay-out across a range of conditions on our income protection policies, demonstrating the valuable support we have given our members at the time they have needed it the most.”
