Life insurance for Microlight Pilots

Overview – what is a Microlight?

A microlight is an aeroplane, capable of flight in the same way as any other. However, it is restricted to 2 seats and must weigh around 265kg at most, plus it must be able to fly at low speed.

Life insurance premiums for pilots depends on the type of flying performed and the risks involved.

For example, commercial flying is generally considered lower risk, because flying larger planes is statistically proven to be safer than flying small aircraft. If you are a commercial helicopter pilot working within the oil industry, or a micro-light pilot, this will be perceived very differently by insurers due to the risks involved.

Types of flying that have different perceived risks would include:
  • commercial airline pilot
  • private/ recreational pilot a helicopter pilot – private/recreational
  • Flying as a glider pilot
  • Hang-gliding, microlight flying and paragliding
  • A pilot in the armed forces

Our client: How does flying a microlight affect arranging life insurance?

We were approached by a client who had a life insurance policy in place with a sum assured of £80,000, and he was paying £81 per month.   The policy was due to expire within 12 months and was therefore not unsuitable to meet his needs  Our client was keen to take out a policy over a longer period of time but had found it difficult to find an insurance company who would offer it to him at a competitive price. The reason for this was that he had been taking flying lessons and was in the process of qualifying for a license for fixed-wing microlight flying.

When we carried out our research with a few insurers, they explained that they would want to increase the cost of his premiums by over £100 per year, as they perceived his flying as incurring additional risks to his life.

Our process and advice

At Future Proof, we have access to specialist insurance companies who don’t deal directly with the public. These companies offer more specialised policies, designed to provide cover where other major providers can’t.

Our research process involves us contacting many insurers to find out the best possible outcome for our clients. Which avoids any nasty shocks later on during the underwriting process.

Would the insurer add a ‘loading’ to their standard premium? (this is an additional sum charged on top of their standard monthly premium to reflect their additional risk). Or, exclude a hobby?

Might they decline the application? We want to avoid wasting time by making applications which may be declined.

We have up to date knowledge of the ever-changing landscape of underwriting for all providers in the UK and are committed to thorough research so that you don’t have to. What’s more, our advice comes at no obligation and with no hidden costs.  You don’t pay us directly but we do get paid by the insurer if you decide to start a policy with them.

The outcome

We challenged the most suitable and cost-effective insurer’s decision, especially as our client had not taken part in any flying during the 12 months prior to his enquiry, or indeed had any definite plans to fly again in the immediate future.  This was mainly to do with the cost.

The insurance company took on board our feedback with regards to the frequency of his flying, and they eventually agreed to waive the additional loading that they wanted to add to their standard quoted premium.

Whilst you are welcome to get a quote online, we would recommend you speak to one of our advisers.

Any quote that your adviser provides you with will take into account your circumstances and medical history, as well as your budget!

An online quote is just that – a quote – it isn’t a definite offer of cover. What really matters is the premium you are offered, after your application has been assessed.
