Can I get Insured with HIV? Will my Insurance cover HIV?

After diagnosis, some people believe their life insurance has become invalid, as many individuals living with HIV do not believe they can be covered by a Life Insurance policy. However, this is not the case. People with HIV can be covered by Life Insurance. HIV is now treated by insurers like any other medical condition, and research shows that people who are HIV Positive are securing life insurance policies. There are now many more options on the market and depending on their current medical information, people are able to secure policies that run over a longer period of time.

Cover is now being offered over 15 and 25 years compared to a maximum of 10 years previously – such is the advancement of medicine extending life expectancies. However, as with many pre-existing medical conditions, some people may not be eligible for certain products and may have to pay higher premiums due to the risk posed to the insurer. There are a number of insurance products that cover pre-existing medical conditions, and the type of policy and premiums will differ between insurers just like other insurance products. It is due to this and the constantly advancing marketplace that expert financial advice should be sought before taking out Life Insurance cover.

We always advise our clients that it is best to take out life insurance cover over the longest term possible (depending on budget), in case their health or circumstances change.

WHAT WILL INSURERS ASK ME WHEN I APPLY FOR LIFE INSURANCE?

According to the Association of British Insurers (ABI), An insurer’s job is to assess risk and offer customers the right level of cover at the right price. They, therefore, want to be able to predict how likely you are to make a claim. They usually do this by asking questions when you take out a policy, and then use your answers, as well as their experience of previous claims and statistics, to work out how likely you are to claim as well as the potential amount of the claim.

Insurers work this out by comparing the data you provide to similar data sources in the UK.
Insurers will usually ask you questions about your medical history and may ask whether you have tested positive for HIV.

Insurers will also want to know whether you have responded well to HIV treatment or have had medical complications due to HIV, to assess whether they can offer Life insurance cover, and what your monthly premium will be. As with all medical conditions, insurers will only ask relevant questions to assess their risk.

Insurers consider each case individually and will not ask speculative questions based on assumptions. Insurers do not want irrelevant information, such as your sexual orientation, and will not use it even if you happen to disclose it.

However, if you know you are HIV positive and do not disclose this on an application form, it is likely that your policy will be invalid and your insurer is highly unlikely to pay out if you die. This would leave your family or beneficiaries without the financial support you have been paying for. It is therefore important that every effort is made to answer all the questions on your application as carefully and accurately as possible and to the best of your knowledge. A fully underwritten plan is vital as it means that your pre-existing condition will not be excluded.

Applying for life insurance when you have HIV shouldn’t be stressful. We have up to date knowledge of the ever-changing landscape of underwriting for all providers in the UK and are committed to thorough research so you don’t have to. We have access to specialist insurance companies that don’t deal directly with the public. These companies offer more specialised policies, designed to provide cover where other major providers can’t, plus we know the most suitable insurers to apply to based on your individual circumstances.

What’s more, our advice comes with no obligation or hidden costs. You don’t pay us directly but we do get paid by the insurer if you decide to start a policy with them.

WILL MY LIFE INSURANCE POLICY COVER HIV?

The vast majority of Life insurance contracts in the UK do not have exclusions for any medical conditions, including HIV, which are diagnosed after your cover has started. This means if you take out a policy but then find out you are HIV positive you will continue to be covered. As with all insurance products, you should check the terms and conditions of your policy, especially before you cancel it because, with other pre-existing medical conditions, the price for a new policy could be higher once you have been diagnosed with HIV. If you are considering cancelling your Life Insurance, speak to your financial adviser first to ensure that you understand your options.

DO I NEED TO TELL MY INSURER THAT I AM NOW HIV POSITIVE?

No – your insurer does not need to know about any medical conditions you are diagnosed with, including HIV after you have taken out your policy. Once Life insurance is in place it remains there until you either choose to cancel it or when it pays out under the terms of the contract. A diagnosis of HIV or any other condition does not change the monthly premium you pay, or the amount of money paid out on a claim. It is worth noting that if you stop paying your monthly premiums your Life Insurance cover will end and you would need to reapply for new cover.

Whilst you are welcome to get a quote online, we would recommend you speak to one of our advisers.

Any quote that your adviser provides you with will take into account your circumstances and medical history, as well as your budget!

An online quote is just that – a quote – it isn’t a definite offer of cover. What really matters is the premium you are offered, after your application has been assessed.
