Life Insurance and Motorbike Track Racing
Many people enjoy racing motor vehicles, however, due to the increased risk to life, not many life insurance companies like to take the same risk. Most providers will either decline cover or charge an exorbitant extra premium to price themselves out of the market.
Our client approached us as he wanted us to help him find life insurance at an acceptable premium within his budget. Our client races motorbikes with engine sizes are under 300cc on tracks and circuits, which meant that fortunately, we were able to find him a life insurance policy with only a £9 per month loading above the quoted premium!
A ‘loading’ is an additional amount that an insurer may add to the quoted premium once they have completed their underwriting process. The loading reflects the additional risk the insurer believes that they are incurring by offering cover to the applicant, either due to their medical history or if they have a hazardous job/hobby.
Our client also suffered from stress. Many people often suffer stress and have to take time off work, some for only a few weeks, and others for a much longer period of time. Stress can be linked to home life, work, or many other life experiences and is often put down to mental health issues.
Our process and advice
At Future Proof, we have access to specialist insurance companies who don’t deal directly with the public. These companies offer more specialised policies, designed to provide cover where other major providers can’t.
Our research process involves us contacting many, if not all insurers, to find out the best possible outcome for our clients and avoids any nasty shocks later on during the underwriting process.
Would the insurer add a ‘loading’ to their standard premium, or exclude a condition?
Might they decline the application? We want to avoid wasting time by making applications which may be declined.
We have up to date knowledge of the ever-changing landscape of underwriting for all providers in the UK and are committed to thorough research so that you don’t have to. What’s more, our advice comes at no obligation and with no hidden costs. You don’t pay us directly but we do get paid by the insurer if you decide to start a policy with them.
Life insurance companies will often decline to cover clients who have taken time off work. This particular client had taken 6 months off work in the last year to recuperate which is longer than the average time to take off work. Upon further investigation, we managed to understand the specific reasons for his absence from work in more detail. This included the type of company he worked for and his role within it. We found that the source of the stress was work-related, allowing the underwriters to better understand his situation.
Combining motorbike track racing and stress
In isolation, either of these issues could make it difficult to place life insurance for clients. However, often when you combine two different issues, such as a hazardous pastime and also a long time off work due to stress, many people will not be able to get cover.
We provided more detail to the senior underwriters and pre-agreed favourable terms with one insurance company, who said that they would only charge an extra £9 per month for the track racing and increase his premium by 65% due to the stress disclosure.
Although we could not obtain standard rates, we did manage to find several providers who were willing to provide cover with a minimal increase in premium of under 100%.

All our case studies are based on actual client scenarios, many of which pre-date 2020. We are confident that the acceptance decision made by the insurers would still be offered. Although it is likely that the rates will have changed, your own circumstances will determine whether what amount will be payable by you and would be fully discussed with you before any plan is implemented.
Please note that any premiums mentioned are indicative only and based on this specific case study/ example, which is shown for information purposes only. Your own circumstances will determine whether the amount payable is more or less than the figure quoted.
Whilst you are welcome to get a quote online, we would recommend you speak to one of our advisers.
Any quote that your adviser provides you with will take into account your circumstances and medical history, as well as your budget!
An online quote is just that – a quote – it isn’t a definite offer of cover. What really matters is the premium you are offered, after your application has been assessed.
