Psoriatic arthritis and critical illness insurance

What is Psoriatic arthritis?

Psoriatic arthritis is a type of arthritis that affects some people with the skin condition psoriasis. It typically causes affected joints to become swollen, stiff and painful.

Like psoriasis, psoriatic arthritis is a long-term condition that can get progressively worse. If it’s severe, there’s a risk of the joints becoming permanently damaged or deformed, and surgery may be needed.

If the condition is diagnosed and treated early it’s progression can be slowed down, and permanent joint damage can be prevented or minimised.

Causes of psoriatic arthritis

Almost 1 in 3 people with psoriasis also have psoriatic arthritis.

It tends to develop 5 to 10 years after psoriasis is diagnosed. Although some people may have problems with their joints before they notice any skin-related symptoms.

The condition is thought to happen as a result of the immune system mistakenly attacking healthy tissue, just like psoriasis.

But it’s not clear why some people with psoriasis develop psoriatic arthritis and others do not.

Our client: Julie’s story

Julie approached us as she was interested in arranging a Life insurance policy which included Critical illness cover. She had been suffering from Psoriatic arthritis which was originally diagnosed in 2001.

The main areas being affected were both hands and her left wrist.

Her condition had deteriorated over the last few years and she had been taking Methotrexate. Methotrexate is a type of medicine called an immunosuppressant. It slows down your body’s immune system and helps reduce inflammation.

Our process and advice

At Future Proof, we have access to specialist insurance companies who don’t deal directly with the public. Those which offer more specialised policies, designed to provide cover where other major providers can’t.

Our research process involves us contacting many insurers to find out the best possible outcome for our clients. This avoids any nasty shocks later on during the underwriting process.

Would the insurer add a ‘loading’ to their standard premium? (this is an additional sum charged on top of their standard monthly premium to reflect their additional risk)

Might they decline the application? We want to avoid wasting time by making applications which may be declined.

The outcome

In our research, many insurance companies told us that as Methotrexate is a steroid-based medication, this would not be a straightforward case. They would either increase (load) the premium for Critical illness Insurance. Alternatively, they may exclude the condition or decline to offer cover altogether.

However, using our knowledge of the market we were able to find a company who would accept the application for Critical illness cover. , albeit with an exclusion for Arthritis. There was NO increase in premium despite that fact that she was regularly taking Methotrexate, plus, as they had excluded Arthritis, they offered her a discount.

We have up to date knowledge of the ever-changing landscape of underwriting for all providers in the UK and are committed to thorough research so that you don’t have to. What’s more our advice comes at no obligation and with no hidden costs.  You don’t pay us directly but we do get paid by the insurer if you decide to start a policy with them.

Next steps

Whilst you are welcome to get a quote online but we would recommend you talk to one of our advisers.

Any quote that your adviser provides you with will take into account your circumstances, your medical history, as well as your budget!

An online quote is just that – a quote – it isn’t a definite offer of cover. What really matters is the premium you are offered, after your application has been assessed.
