Case study

We were approached by a 53 year old lady who was looking to arrange some life insurance to help her family eventually pay for her funeral and provide some financial support when she passes away.

Upon reviewing her medical history she mentioned that in 2010 she was diagnosed with Paroxysmal Atrial Fibrillation. No medical examination was called for at the time and the symptoms of the condition disappeared after a month or two with no symptoms since.

More about Atrial fibrillation

Atrial fibrillation is a heart condition that causes an irregular and often abnormally fast heart rate. A normal heart rate should be regular and between 60 and 100 beats a minute when you’re resting. You can measure your heart rate by feeling the pulse in your neck or wrist. In atrial fibrillation, the heart rate is irregular and can sometimes be very fast. In some cases, it can be considerably higher than 100 beats a minute.

This can cause problems including dizziness, shortness of breath and tiredness. You may be aware of noticeable heart palpitations, where your heart feels like it’s pounding, fluttering or beating irregularly, often for a few seconds or, in some cases, a few minutes. Sometimes, atrial fibrillation doesn’t cause any symptoms and a person with it is completely unaware that their heart rate isn’t regular.

Despite it being over 7 years since our client had experienced the symptoms, most insurers advised that an application would result in a premium loading ranging between 25% and 50%.

The Outcome

One insurer was able to offer the cover she wanted on standard rates at a monthly premium of £23.80, this would provide her with a policy which would pay out £15,000 if she passes away before the age of 90.

Initially, this company looked to be the 4th cheapest, but after underwriting the top 3 companies loaded their premiums making them more expensive. This highlights why expert advice is so vital in getting the best deal for our clients.

Please note that any premiums mentioned are indicative only and based on this specific case study/ example, which is shown for information purposes only. Your own circumstances will determine whether the amount payable is more or less than the figure quoted.
