We were recently contacted by a 30 year old man, who is a non smoker, single with no dependants. He was hoping to arrange either some Income Protection Insurance. His main concern was the financial impact if he become unable to work as the result of illness or an accident. The cover would allow him to continue to pay his mortgage and other bills.
However, as our client had a family history of Huntington’s Disease (his father was aged 45 at diagnosis and his sister was in her mid twenties). He said he had been struggling to obtain any form of Income Protection cover.
The client had taken a genetic test which showed that he had the Huntington’s gene and was therefore more likely to develop the disease himself. However, The Association of British Insurers have banned insurance companies from asking for the result of a genetic test unless an actual diagnosis is made. As our client only has the gene and showed no symptoms of the actual disease he did not need to disclose this.
We spoke to many insurance companies and nearly all of them informed us that the client would not be able to obtain Income Protection Insurance due to his family history. However, one insurance company takes a different underwriting stance. Assuming an applicant has a clean bill of health themselves, they would be able to offer cover. Our client was delighted to hear this and was able to obtain income protection on standard rates (no exclusions and no increases on top of quoted premium).
The client was therefore able to obtain a short term income protection until retirement age, with a sum assured of £2,158 per month with a deferred (waiting) period of 4 weeks for a monthly premium of £32.37 per month.
Please note that any premiums mentioned are indicative only and based on this specific case study/ example, which is shown for information purposes only. Your own circumstances will determine whether the amount payable is more or less than the figure quoted.
