Our process

When a client has a pre-existing condition, or has suffered a serious illness in the past, the first thing we do is pick up the phone. We speak to Underwriters at many of the UK’s leading Insurance companies. Discussing all of our client’s medical history helps us to identify the best company to apply to. This also means we avoid applying to companies who will end up being too expensive or worse, decline an application. By completing our research thoroughly, we are able to avoid wasting time and obtain the best terms possible for our clients.

Our Client

We were approached by Mr L, a 48 year old University Lecturer who required Income protection. Being the breadwinner and only source of income for his family, Mr L was very worried that if the worst were to happen, his workplace would only pay his salary for 12 months.

He required a monthly benefit of £2000 with a 1 year waiting period (deferred period) until the age of 65.

However, Mr A has experienced problems in arranging income protection on his own and was already declined by two insurers due to having been infected with Hepatitis B since birth and has lived with it all his life.

Hepatitis B is an infection of the liver caused by a virus that’s spread through blood and body fluids. It often doesn’t cause any obvious symptoms in adults and typically passes in a few months without treatment. In children, it often persists for years and may eventually cause serious liver damage in the form of cirrhosis of the liver and in the worst cases it can eventually lead to liver cancer.

The Outcome

Each Insurance Provider has their own underwriting guide and we contacted them all to find the best solution. Having the medical reports given to me by the client , we were able to find two companies who would offer cover, subject to further GP reports.

One of the companies could only offer an age related premium (this means that the premium is recalculated every year according to your age, which means the premium increases every year) these policies can be cheaper initially but over the long term they may become unaffordable).

The other company would offer a non age related guaranteed premium, once the GP report was underwritten. We were able to achieve a minimum of a 25% increase on his income protection  premium which was a great result and MR L was over the moon!

Mr L now has an income protection policy with a monthly sum assured of £2000 until the age of 65 for a monthly premium of £144.46.

Please note that the premiums provided are indicative only and based on this specific case study/ example, which is shown for information purposes only. Your own circumstances will determine whether the amount payable is more or less than the figure quoted.

Any quote that your adviser provides you with will take into account to your circumstances, your medical history, as well as your budget!

An on-line quote is just that – a quote – it isn’t a definite offer of cover. What really matters is the premium you are offered, after your application has been assessed.
