Case study – Fibromyalgia and how it can affect life insurance.

Miss S a 36 year old non smoker, contacted us to review her policy existing life insurance policy. She told us it was due to expire in 2030. She was concerned that her children (aged 7 and 10) will have no financial support if she dies after the policy expires. She asked us to look into helping her a replacement life policy over a longer period.

She told us that she suffers from mild to moderate fibromyalgia. She gets occasional pain,

According to the NHS the main symptoms of fibromyalgia are:

  • Widespread pain. If you have fibromyalgia, one of the main symptoms is likely to be widespread pain.
  • Extreme sensitivity.
  • Stiffness.
  • Fatigue.
  • Poor sleep quality.
  • Cognitive problems (‘fibro-fog’)
  • Headaches.
  • Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)

Our process

When a client has a pre-existing condition, or has suffered a serious illness in the past, the first thing we do is pick up the phone. We speak to Underwriters at many of the UK’s leading Insurance companies. Discussing all of our client’s medical history helps us to identify the best company to apply to. This also means we avoid applying to companies who will end up being too expensive or worse, decline an application. By being upfront and detailed, we are able to obtain the best terms possible for our clients.

The application process

We looked at various options for her for longer running cover and in view of her budget and circumstances she decided that policy to age 85 would be suitable and she was happy to submit an application.

As a result of the disclosure of fibromyalgia during the application, the insurance company requested further information about her condition.

A good outcome

One of the underwriters contacted her and after an brief interview over the phone they accepted her application on standard terms. This means there was no increase on top of the standard premium.

Our client now has a life or earlier terminal illness policy (with an index linked option) which will pay out £75,000 if she passes away before reaching her 85th birthday. She is paying a monthly premium of £12.12
