Case study

Mr T, a 61 year old non-smoker and Mrs T a 58 year old smoker contacted us as they wanted to replace their current policies with longer running cover for the purpose of family protection.

They both have three children and wanted to ensure that if either died that there would be enough money for the family. The most effective way of providing this cover was to take out a policy each to run until their 90th birthday’s as they couldn’t afford Whole of Life cover.

However, Mr T is 5ft 6 and weighs 16 stone. This means that he has a BMI (body mass index) of 36.1 and is classified as obese. Mrs T has a family history of Breast and Bowel Cancer* for 2 of her relatives have both been diagnosed under the age of 65.

More about breast cancer

*Breast cancer is a common cancer and 1 in 8 women develop it during their lifetime in the UK. But fewer than 3 out of every 100 breast cancers (3%) are caused by an inherited faulty gene. The genes that increase the risk of breast cancer and can be tested for are BRCA1, BRCA2, TP53 and PTEN. Occasionally, when someone who has had breast cancer has a test for the BRCA genes the test can show changes in another gene such as CHEK2. Individual tests for these other genes are not yet available.

More about bowel cancer

*Bowel cancer is the 4th most common type of cancer in the UK. Around 7 in 100 men (7%) and 5 in 100 women (5%) will develop bowel cancer during their lifetime. Some inherited genes can increase the risk of developing bowel cancer and cause the conditions mentioned here. Around 1 in 20 cases of bowel cancer (5%) occur in people who have other family members with bowel cancer.

The Outcome

Each insurer has their own underwriting guidelinelines and we contacted them all to find the best solution. Most of the providers would increase the cost of the cover. However we found one company that were able to offer insurance on standard rates for both of them.

Mr T and Mrs T were pleased that we were able to arrange increasing term policies for each of them with sums assured’s of £70,000 until age 90 for a combined monthly premium of £173.12.

Please note that any premiums mentioned are indicative only and based on this specific case study/ example, which is shown for information purposes only. Your own circumstances will determine whether the amount payable is more or less than the figure quoted.
