What is Spina Bifida?

Spina bifida is a type of birth defect called a neural tube defect. It occurs when the bones of the spine (vertebrae) don’t form properly around part of the baby’s spinal cord. Spina bifida can be mild or severe. The mild form is the most common. Case study

We were recently contacted by a 36 year old non-smoker. He told us he had recently applied for some life insurance cover directly with an insurance company, but his application was declined.

It turned out the reason the application was declined was because he has Spina Bifida. He was now under the impression that he wouldn’t be able to take out life insurance.

We said we would be happy to complete some research to see if we could find him an insurer who would be prepared to offer cover. After speaking directly with underwriters at several of the UK’s leading insurers, we identified the insurer who was going to offer the best terms (subject to them writing to his GP for a medical report). We believe that it is important to manage our client’s expectations. If it is likely that the initial ‘quoted’ premium will increase due to the medical condition being discussed, we tell the client what the final premium is likely to be, therefore they can avoid any unexpected surprises.

In this case, we told the client that the most likely outcome would be he would be offered the cover, but at the quoted premium plus an additional 50% (this additional amount is called a loading).

He told us he was happy for us to submit an application, which we completed with him over the phone, without the need to complete long and complicated forms.

Fantastic outcome

After assessing the information from the GP, the insurer actually offered the cover on standard terms (no increase to the basic premium)!

The client now has a level term life or earlier terminal illness policy which offers a sum assured of £200,000. The total monthly premium payable is £22.86 until he reaches his 65th birthday.

Please note that any premiums mentioned are indicative only and based on this specific case study/ example, which is shown for information purposes only. Your own circumstances will determine whether the amount payable is more or less than the figure quoted.

How to contact us:

Whilst you are welcome to get a quote on-line but we would recommend you talk to one of our advisers.

Your adviser will take into account your medical history. Any quote which they provide to you will take into account to your situation, your medical history, as well as your budget!

An on-line quote is just that – a quote – it isn’t a definite offer of cover. What really matters is the premium you are offered, after your application has been assessed.
