Can I get life insurance after a serious asthma attack?

Can I get life insurance after a serious asthma attack?

What is asthma?

Asthma is a common lung condition which causes occasional breathing difficulties.

It affects people of all ages and often starts in childhood, although it can also develop for the first time in adulthood.

Symptoms of asthma

The main symptoms of asthma are:

  • a whistling sound when breathing (wheezing)
  • breathlessness
  • a tight chest, which may feel like a tight band around it
  • coughing

When symptoms peak, this is known as an asthma attack.

Our client

Mr M and Mrs S, both 40-year-old non-smokers, contacted us because they needed Life or Terminal Illness cover to protect their mortgage. They also wanted to secure additional family protection and Critical Illness cover as they have two young children.

The mortgage had an outstanding balance of £242,000 over a remaining term of 21 years.

However, Mrs S, an asthmatic had a serious asthma attack a week before applying for cover.

Our process and advice

Each insurance provider has their own specific underwriting criteria.   At Future Proof, we have access to specialist insurance companies who don’t deal directly with the public but offer more specialised policies, designed to provide cover where other major providers can’t.

Our research process involves us contacting many insurers to find out the best possible outcome for our clients, and avoids any nasty shocks later on during the underwriting process.

Many of the providers we spoke to would not provide cover for her for a period of between 12 to 24 months, after which time they would reconsider her application.  One insurer even declined to offer cover altogether.

The Outcome

Our clients were pleased that we were able to source a good provider despite Mrs S suffering a serious asthma attack. The insurer agreed to accept our client for a Decreasing Term Life or Terminal Illness policy, with an initial sum assured of £242,000 over a 21-year term.

Mrs S also secured the additional family life protection they wanted, and Mr M was accepted for additional Life with separate Critical Illness cover. The combined monthly premium was £45.79.

Please note that any premiums mentioned are indicative only and based on this specific case study/ example, which is shown for information purposes only. Your own circumstances will determine whether the amount payable is more or less than the figure quoted.
