Ask the Adviser – Molly Higgins
In order to assess how much life insurance you need, your Adviser will ask you the following questions:
Mortgage – How much is outstanding? What is the remaining term of the mortgage?
Rent – How much rent do you pay per month? Also, consider how much your rent may increase in the future
Debts – What is the total amount owed and over what term?
Outgoings – regular monthly bills such as travel costs, utility bills, council tax, school fees, maintenance payments perhaps?
Family – How many children/dependents do you have? How old are they? And how long do you feel they will be dependent upon your income/care?
All of the above will help you build a picture of how much cover you need and for how long it needs to be in place. This can be a bit involved as they aren’t everyday questions and you may need to do some research to find relevant information/paperwork.
If you are still unsure about whether you are insuring yourself at the right level, speak to one of our helpful advisers who can guide you and make suggestions that you may not have considered.
Our advice comes at no obligation and with no hidden costs. You don’t pay us directly but we get paid by the insurer if you decide to start a policy with them.
We are advisers, not salespeople. You and your family come first and are at the heart of any advice that we provide. We like to think that we are friendly, approachable and professional! But don’t take our word for it, have a look at what our clients say about us.
What about price comparison websites?
Whilst everyone is welcome to use a comparison website, here are a few points that highlight the differences between sourcing cover through an adviser and a comparison website.
Looking for the ‘cheapest premium’ for life insurance does not always provide the best cover
The life insurance cover will depend on you and your individual circumstances. For example, if you are slightly older or have a pre-existing medical condition you might have to pay more for your policy. However, if you are younger with no medical problems, you could get the same cover at a cheaper price.
Pre-underwriting avoids nasty shocks
Future Proof has up to date knowledge of all insurers in the UK, including specialist providers which the general public cannot access directly. All insurers vary when it comes to the monthly premiums they charge, and the level of cover they provide. We contact many insurers to find the best possible outcome for our clients and can identify which insurers are best suited for our clients in terms of medical history or unusual hobbies. This process avoids any nasty shocks later on during the application/underwriting process such as increased premiums, excluded health conditions or a declined application.
Future Proof can arrange for a Trust to be completed as part of our service. This means that any claim will be paid out directly to the person/people you want it to go to. A Trust sits outside of the deceased’s estate which speeds up the who process and removes it from any inheritance tax* liability.
Responsibility of doing the right thing
With a comparison site, the responsibility of choosing the right insurance policy rests on your shoulders. Do the level and term of the cover meet your needs? Have you chosen the most cost-effective premium or the cheapest premium that the comparison site offers? By using an expert, the responsibility of advice rests on their shoulders and gives you confidence that you have the most appropriate policy available at the most cost-effective price.
*The levels and bases of taxation, and reliefs from taxation, can change at any time. The value of any tax relief depends on individual circumstances.
Trusts are not regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority.
Whilst you are welcome to get a quote online, we would recommend you speak to one of our advisers.
Any quote that your adviser provides you with will take into account your circumstances and medical history, as well as your budget!
An online quote is just that – a quote – it isn’t a definite offer of cover. What really matters is the premium you are offered, after your application has been assessed.
