Will I be able to get cover – even if I’ve been previously declined?
Unfortunately we don’t set the underwriting policies for the UK’s insurance companies (we wish we did). What we can do however, is use our expertise and Independence to help you find the most affordable cover if you are overweight.
We have helped people with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of up to 55 arrange cover, even if they were previously declined before coming to us for help.
We use our expertise to make sure we recommend the right company. We help you to apply and get accepted on the best possible terms. With the lowest possible premiums.
When a client has a pre-existing condition, or has suffered a serious illness in the past, the first thing we do is pick up the phone. We speak to Underwriters at many of the UK’s leading Insurance companies. Discussing all of our client’s medical history helps us to identify the best company to apply to. This also means we avoid applying to companies who will end up being too expensive or worse, decline an application. By completing our research thoroughly, we are able to avoid wasting time and obtain the best terms possible for our clients.
We were contacted in early 2017 by Mr D, a 36 year old non-smoker, as he required a life insurance policy to cover a business loan of £3,040,000 over a term of 7 years.
He had asked to pay an annual premium as this made it easier for his accountant. Although unusual, insurance companies allow both annual and monthly premiums. The premium was quoted as £1,021.00 a year.
Due to the high sum assured, all Insurance Providers requested that he undergo a full medical including blood tests. The Insurance Company pays for the service regardless of whether the client proceeds with the final policy. A doctor visited Mr D and the examination and tests were completed in the comfort of his home.
However the medical showed that Mr D measured 5 feet 7 tall (1.73 metres) and weighed 18 stone (115 kg). This made his Body Mass Index as 39.4 which is classified as clinically obese.
The Insurance Provider agreed to provide the insurance but they doubled the premium to £173.15 a month due to Mr D’s body mass index (BMI).
Traditionally, any changes to health, whether they are good or bad, would not have any impact on a policy once it has started. However the Insurance Provider chosen is one of the few companies who will consider reducing the cost if there has been improvements in the policyholder’s health, ie giving up smoking or losing weight.
Please note that any premiums mentioned are indicative only and based on this specific case study/ example, which is shown for information purposes only. Your own circumstances will determine whether the amount payable is more or less than the figure quoted.
A Change in Lifestyle and a brilliant outcome!
Mr D took up the life insurance offer with a sum assured £3,040,000 but told us that he was determined to reduce the cost. He undertook a change in lifestyle by reviewing his diet and taking up exercise. We remained in touch with Mr D and he kept us updated with his weight loss.
In November 2017, Mr D told us that he had lost well over 3 stone and now was down to only 14 stone 8 lbs (94kg). We contacted the Insurance Provider and they arranged for a nurse to visit Mr D at home, again at their own expense. The nurse confirmed the weight loss and Mr D was delighted that his monthly premium has reduced to £85.08 (a saving of £88.07 a month)!
