Arranging critical illness cover without being excluded for breast cancer

“Can I get critical illness cover without being excluded for breast cancer if I have more than one relative with breast cancer”?

Our client

We were recently approached by Mrs I, a 38-year-old non-smoker. She told us that she wanted to arrange some critical illness insurance which would pay out a lump sum if she was diagnosed with a condition such as breast cancer.

Critical illness insurance pays out a lump sum in the event that the policyholder is diagnosed with a condition which is covered by their policy.

In this case Mrs I wanted to arrange a policy which would pay out £50,000 if she became critically ill before she retires. The money could be used for private health care, travel expenses incurred getting to and from a clinic. Or, to adapt her home if necessary.

Our client’s background

Mrs I told us that she had experienced problems in arranging critical illness cover without receiving an exclusion for breast cancer in the past.

Each time she applied, the insurer always excluded breast cancer because she has a family history of her condition. Her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 30 and sadly passed away aged 38. Her grandmother was diagnosed at 54 but has survived and has been in remission ever since.

Our research process and advice

Once we had a good understanding of our Mrs I’s situation, requirements and medical history we started our research process.

Arranging critical illness cover without being excluded for breast cancer involves us contacting many, if not all of the UK’s leading insurers to discuss our client’s story. The purpose of this is to establish how they might view a clients application.

Will they add a ‘loading’ to the premium (this is an additional amount on top of the standard monthly premium to reflect their additional risk)?

Will they exclude certain conditions? In this case breast cancer.

Will they decline an application? We want to avoid wasting time by making applications which might be declined.

It pays to be thorough!

Virtually every single insurer said they would exclude breast cancer, however, we managed to find one company who would include breast cancer but would add a ‘loading’ to the standard quoted premium.

Mrs I was extremely pleased to accept the loading, as having the cover was very important to her. She now has the security of having a level term life or earlier critical illness policy in place with a sum assured of £50,000, over a term of 29 years, for a monthly premium of £61.86.

It’s also important to note that whether you are excluded depends on your age, your relatives’ ages when they were diagnosed, and how many relatives have been affected.

Initially, insurers will only ask about relatives under the age of 65, however, depending on their ages. You may be asked to provide further information about previous generations and that could result in an exclusion.
