Can I get Life and Critical Illness Cover after recovering from a coma?

Our client

We were approached by Mr R, a 24-year-old gentleman who was in the process of buying his first home. He had unfortunately been in a coma when he was previously serving in the army.

He wanted a life and critical illness policy with a sum assured of £162,000 over a term of 30 years. He wanted the cover in place to ensure that funds would be available to repay his mortgage should he pass away, or suffer a critical illness.

We discussed various options and explained that the cheapest type of cover would be a decreasing term policy. This would cost approximately £20.68 per month.  However, he confirmed he wanted to apply for a level term policy that would provide additional family cover. This would happen as his mortgage balance reduces over time. Although he didn’t require any additional family cover at the time, he felt that it would be required in the future.

The cheapest level term policy was quoted at £27.05 per month. We explained that the most comprehensive critical illness policy, covering 80 medical conditions, would cost around £32.21 a month.  Recommending that he consider the most comprehensive policy affordable and he agreed.

Medical History

However, our client had an unusual medical history. Whilst serving in the Armed Forces prior to 2013 he suffered internal injuries. His vehicle was hit by an IED blast in Afghanistan. The injuries caused his internal organs to shut down and he went into a coma.

Coming out of the coma

Following treatment in Germany, he made an amazing recovery from his coma and injuries. He was subsequently medically discharged from the Army. Since then he has retrained as an electrical engineer and now has a successful career. So much so that he is now able to buy his first home at a relatively young age.

It wasn’t possible to obtain an immediate underwriting decision due to the unusual nature of his medical history. An application was submitted to an insurance provider for life and critical illness cover. They requested medical information from his GP so that they could fully assess his medical history.

The Outcome

Initially, the Insurance Provider felt that they would not be able to provide cover. This was due to the seriousness of his medical history including the coma. Understandably, our customer was upset to be declined insurance. Especially, considering that he now works full-time in a physically demanding role.
He contacted the Insurers Underwriting Team directly to discuss the reason for their decision. It transpired that his GP had omitted to include the results of recent liver tests which showed that his liver function is within normal parameters.
The Insurer agreed to review its decision. Considering the new evidence provided by our client and his GP, they have now offered him the full amount of cover. The premium was loaded by 50%, so the final monthly premium is £46.20. Our client was happy to have obtained the full insurance he needed at an affordable premium.
