Can I Get Life Cover with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD)?
At Future Proof, we pride ourselves on having expert knowledge of the market place and make it our business to work closely with Underwriters from all insurers.
We recently had a customer who needed Life Insurance as he had a young daughter to protect. The need for adequate cover was compounded by the fact that his wife had died recently, at a young age. He is now a single parent. Unfortunately, he was suffering from Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD), high blood pressure (HBP) & Hypertensive Nephrosclerosis. Due to his pre-existing conditions, all of the ‘high street’ insurers had declined to offer cover.
More about Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD)
- Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a long-term condition where the kidneys don’t work as well as they should
- It’s a common condition often associated with getting older. Anyone can get it, although it’s more common in people of African origin and South Asian origin
- CKD can get gradually worse over time and eventually the kidneys may stop working altogether, but this is uncommon
- Many people with kidney disease are able to live long, largely normal lives
- Hypertensive kidney disease is a medical condition referring to damage to the kidney due to chronic high blood pressure
Our Process and advice
At Future Proof, we have access to specialist insurance companies that don’t deal directly with the public. These companies offer more specialised policies, designed to provide cover where other major providers can’t.
Our research process involves us contacting many insurers to find out the best possible outcome for our clients. Which avoids any nasty shocks later on during the underwriting process.
Would the insurer add a ‘loading’ to their standard premium? (this is an additional sum charged on top of their standard monthly premium to reflect their additional risk). Or, exclude a condition?
Might they decline the application? We want to avoid wasting time by making applications that may be declined.
We have up to date knowledge of the ever-changing landscape of underwriting for all providers in the UK. Future Proof is committed to thorough research so that you don’t have to. What’s more, our advice comes at no obligation and with no hidden costs. You don’t pay us directly but we do get paid by the insurer if you decide to start a policy with them.
A good outcome!
The application was completed and referred to the Underwriters. The Underwriters were told that the CKD was Stage 2 due to the high blood pressure (HBP) was only related to the recent death of his wife. After some discussion, it was agreed that a GP’s report would be requested.
The quoted premium came back at £111 per month for £50,000 cover. We suggested that we proceed with the application and a report was requested from our client’s GP.
The good news is the medical reports demonstrated the client’s condition was better than originally discussed. The cover was offered for £59 per month!
Please note that any premiums mentioned are indicative only and based on this specific case study/ example, which is shown for information purposes only. Your own circumstances will determine whether the amount payable is more or less than the figure quoted.
What was the alternative?
An ‘underwritten’ life insurance policy usually offers cover at a significantly better price as well as being more comprehensive than an over 50’s plan.
Over 50’s plans are tempting as they do not require any medical underwriting. As such they are quicker and easier to put in place. However, they don’t represent good value when ‘underwritten’ cover is available. It’s also worth bearing in mind that Over 50’s plans do not offer full cover in the first 12/24 months. On the upside, some cover is better than no cover, so they have their use!
It’s worth bearing in mind, everyone’s situation is different. If you have any questions or would like some advice, the best thing to do is call one of our friendly advisers. They would be happy to explain your options.

Whilst you are welcome to get a quote online, we would recommend you speak to one of our advisers.
Any quote that your adviser provides you with will take into account your circumstances and medical history, as well as your budget!
An online quote is just that – a quote – it isn’t a definite offer of cover. What really matters is the premium you are offered, after your application has been assessed.
