Can life insurance companies access medical records?

The short answer is yes, but not without your permission.
If you are applying for life insurance, critical illness or income protection, your insurer may ask you for permission to contact your GP so that they can obtain details of your medical history.
There may be many reasons for this:
- The level of insurance cover you are applying for
- You have a pre-existing medical condition
- The combination of your age and level of cover applied for
- A claim has been made and certain details need to be validated prior to payment
When you submit an application, your insurer will decide whether they need to obtain details from your medical records and if so, they will send you a declaration form called an AMRA ( Access to Medical Reports Act). You will need to sign this form and return it to them so that they can request the information they require to assess your application.
