Can I get Critical Illness Insurance with Myalgic Encephalopathy (ME)?
A 30-year-old lady approached us because she was looking for critical illness cover. which would provide a lump sum should she suffer a life-threatening condition. She felt that a policy with a sum assured of £20,000 would be sufficient.
Unfortunately, she suffered a viral infection in September 2013 which led to chronic fatigue and Myalgic Encephalopathy (ME) and caused her to be off work for 5 months. She has since made a full recovery and returned to full-time employment.
What is ME?
Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) is a long-term illness with wide-ranging symptoms. The most common symptom is extreme tiredness. CFS is also known as ME, which stands for myalgic encephalomyelitis. CFS/ME can affect anyone, including children, but more common in women and it tends to develop between your mid-20s and mid-40s according to NHS Choices May 2020.
Our process and advice

Our research process involves us contacting many insurers to find out the best possible outcome for our clients. Which avoids any nasty shocks later on during the underwriting process.
Would the insurer add a ‘loading’ to their standard premium? (this is an additional sum charged on top of their standard monthly premium to reflect their additional risk). Or, exclude a condition?
Might they decline the application? We want to avoid wasting time by making applications which may be declined.
Her symptoms and diagnosis made it very difficult for us to obtain an accurate pre-sales decision from any Insurance Provider. Therefore, we decided to apply to two companies to see who would provide the most favourable decision.
Both companies wrote to her GP and requested her full medical history. One provider declined to offer our client a critical illness policy, although, they did say that they would be willing to review their decision after 12 months. However, the second provider was happy to offer her standard terms. Our client was delighted to obtain the full cover she wanted without any increase to her monthly premium. (this case study was originally posted in 2014).
All our case studies are based on actual client scenarios, many of which pre-date 2020. We are confident that the acceptance decision made by the insurers would still be offered, although it is likely that the rates will have changed.
