Can I get life insurance if I am Bipolar?

This also means we avoid applying to companies who will end up being too expensive or worse, decline an application. By completing our research thoroughly, we are able to avoid wasting time and obtain the best terms possible for our clients.

Our Client

Mrs M, a 38-year-old Colombian lady had been declined insurance due to ongoing health problems. She has a mortgage and has recently had a baby, so the urgency for life insurance had become a priority.  Mrs M wanted to ensure funds were available to repay her mortgage and a loan should she pass away.  She also wanted to provide her family with financial protection whilst her daughter is still young and dependent on her.

Her mortgage has £171,000 outstanding over a remaining term of 29 years and her loan has £15,000 to be repaid over a remaining term of 3 years.

Mrs M was diagnosed in Columbia with Bipolar Disorder and had two manic episodes with one in the UK. Due to the recent birth of her daughter Mrs M had been referred to a psychiatrist which is routine for people with Bipolar.  She was having regular 4 weekly appointments with the psychiatrist at the point of her inquiry.

Mrs M is Columbian and Mr is South Korean.  There have been visits back to Columbia during the past 5 years and the intention to show their daughter to their families who are in Columbia and South Korea.

The Outcome

Each Insurance Provider has their own underwriting guidelines and we contacted them all to find the best solution.  The first provider we applied with almost quadrupled the monthly premium, due to being unable to access the doctor’s notes on her Bipolar diagnosis.  The client had fully disclosed all information and was quite unhappy about this, but understood that the premium would be higher than a standard premium. 

We discussed our client’s medical history with other providers and were able to find one company who were willing to offer insurance with a much smaller premium increase of 200%.

Mrs M was very pleased that we were able to arrange a decreasing term life or earlier terminal illness policy with an initial sum assured of £190,000 over a term of 29 years for a monthly premium of £44.26.
