Can I get Life insurance with Bipolar Disorder?

If, once you’ve read this case study, you’d like to talk through your situation, please call 0800 644 4468 – Monday to Thursday from 09.00 to 19.00 and on Friday between 09.00 and 17.00.

Our process

When a client has a pre-existing condition, or has suffered a serious illness in the past, the first thing we do is pick up the phone. We speak to Underwriters at many of the UK’s leading Insurance companies. Discussing all of our client’s medical history helps us to identify the best company to apply to. This also means we avoid applying to companies who will end up being too expensive or worse, decline an application. By completing our research thoroughly, we are able to avoid wasting time and obtain the best terms possible for our clients.

 Case study

We were contacted by a 34 year old non smoker who found us through our website after being declined by one of the main insurance companies.

He was looking for life insurance to protect his mortgage that he had arranged recently.

During our completion of his fact find, he told us know that he is Bipolar and his most recent episode was only 3 months ago requiring him to take significant time off work and being hospitalised.

What is Bipolar Disorder?

Bipolar disorder is a form of mental health problem that mainly affects your mood. Although everyone has variations in their mood,  in bipolar disorder these changes can be very distressing and have a big impact on your life. You may feel that your high and low moods are extreme, and that swings in your mood are overwhelming.

If you have bipolar disorder, you are likely to have experienced times where you experience :

  • manicor hypomanic episodes (feeling high)
  • depressive episodes (feeling low)
  • potentially some psychotic symptoms during manic or depressed episodes

The Outcome

Each insurer has their own underwriting guidelines and we contacted them all to find the best solution. Most insurers in these cases would not offer underwritten life insurance however, we found a company that were able to offer cover . This means that Mr B now has life insurance, the only exclusions being for his pre- existing medical conditions and suicide.

Mr B, was pleased that we were able to arrange a Level term Insurance of £100,000 for a monthly premium of £19.10. This is a policy that he can renew each year with no change in the premium until he is 50 years old.

Please note that any premiums mentioned are indicative only and based on this specific case study/ example, which is shown for information purposes only. Your own circumstances will determine whether the amount payable is more or less than the figure quoted.
